Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations. Every September, it brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history. Stories are told, traditions explored, and histories brought to life.
The theme of this year’s heritage celebration, which runs between 12 and 21 September, is architecture.
It’s your once-a-year opportunity to explore some of Oswestry’s historic buildings and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.
This year’s programme includes guided walking tours of the town, tours of Grade I listed Llwyd Mansion, special displays and events at Oswestry Town Museum, open days at the Memorial Hall and local heritage railways, plus talks and a heritage-inspired family fun day on the Bailey Head.
Mark Hignett from Oswestry Town Museum has been championing the town through Heritage Open Days since 2011. He said: Heritage Open Days is a brilliant way to explore our local heritage and make it available to locals and visitors to enjoy.
“There have been many highlights over the years, but one of my favourites has been the Gilbert and Gordon love story project. This year, we will be sharing an update on what has happened since their letters were first discovered and Hollywood came calling.”
Neil Peterson, chair of Love Oswestry, said: “We are proud of supporting Heritage Open Days. Our team recently secured some funding from European Heritage Stories programme to help us make heritage more inclusive. There is so much to love about Oswestry, and HODs is a great way of showcasing what our town has to offer.”
Flyers listing what’s on in Oswestry are available at various locations including the Guildhall, Oswestry Town Museum and Oswestry Memorial Hall.
