On Friday September 12th, the Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group
(OBHAG) will be presenting a talk on failed plans to construct dams in mid Wales.
Richard Church, who has written on this subject for the journal of the Powysland Club, will focus on proposals from the 1860s through to the 1960s, to construct dams across the Vyrnwy, Banwy and Tanat valleys, flooding valleys and uprooting communities, which did not materialise – where dams were never actually built.
OBHAG chair John Pryce-Jones said “We are pleased that Richard has agreed to talk to us on this important subject. We all know about the construction of Lake Vyrnwy in the 1880s, and many will remember the building, near Llanidloes, of the Clywedog dam in the 1960s. I am looking forward to finding out more about these failed schemes, including proposals from the 1950s for a reservoir at Dolanog,
Montgomeryshire.”
The talk will take place at the Methodist Church Hall, Castle Street, Oswestry, starting at 7.30 p.m. New members and visitors are always very welcome at these monthly talks; there is a small entry fee: OBHAG members £2, visitors £5.
Full details of OBHAG’s activities including its monthly talks and lectures, and summer walks and visits are available on the group’s website at http://obhag.org.uk.
