On Friday, September 8th at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall in Castle Street, the Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group (OBHAG) will open its Autumn programme with an illustrated talk by the Rev. Richard Hayes, chairman of the Friends of Lord Hill’s Column.
He will be discussing the life of General Sir Rowland Hill, Viscount Hill (1772-1842) who fought alongside the Duke of Wellington in his campaigns against Napoleon Bonaparte in Spain, Portugal and France, including the battle of Waterloo. Lord Hill’s Column, near to the Shirehall in Shrewsbury, was built between 1814 and 1816 in his honour.
With a height of 133 ft 6 inches, it is taller than Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.
