Oswestry Town Council upgrades Street Lighting to LED

All Oswestry Town Council street lights will be replaced with energy saving LEDs as part of a programme to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs.

Since declaring a Climate Emergency in 2018 and committing to become carbon neutral by 2030, the town council has been busy looking at all the ways it can take action to reduce its carbon footprint.

Upgrading street lights to the latest LED technology is one of the ways.

The council looks after 453 street lights, of which 256 are already LEDs. This year it will be investing £54k in upgrading the remaining 197 street lights that it looks after.

The new LEDs will reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by around 60%, reduce light pollution and will need less maintenance due to their longer average lifetime.

The energy and maintenance savings will mean a good recovery of the capital investment within a few years.

The Mayor of Oswestry cllr Rosie Radford said: “The LED lights will help bring us closer to our aim for net zero emissions by 2030. Lots of us are replacing old bulbs at home with more efficient LEDs, and councils have been doing the same with their street lighting. They are a great solution for saving energy and money.”

“This represents a significant investment. We have made a good start on upgrading our street lights and this final push will complete the project.”

The upgrades start this month and should be completed by the end of summer. We will be working with our selected contractor Highline Electrical Ltd who will carry out the work.

They are a specialist in street lighting and based in Oswestry which means they can respond swiftly to any issues arising.
